Mr. Johnny Beverlyn Boone Sr., affectionately known as "Mr. Johnny B.", departed this life on Sunday, August 7, 2022. He was 89 years old. Mr. Johnny B. was the son of the late Mrs. Ruth Hall Anderson and the late Mr. Jimmy Boone Sr.
A celebration of Mr. Johnny B. Boone's life will be held at his beloved, Mt Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1501 Newton Road, Albany, GA., Sunday August 14, 2022, at 2pm. Rev. Walter Ingram Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Family visitation will be on Saturday, August 13, 2022 from 5-7 PM at Poteat-Wakefield Funeral Directors, 435 Dunbar Lane, Albany, GA 31701.
Educated in the Dougherty County School System, Mr. Johnny B. was a graduate of Madison High School in 1951. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as a medical assistant for the physicians on duty. He received an honorable discharge in 1955, returned home, and enrolled at Albany State College. While attending college, Mr. Johnny B. met Lillian Odessa Barnhart from Crawfortville, GA. They married in 1957. To this union, three children were born.
Mr. Johnny B was then, offered a position as a United States Postal Clerk, and moved his family to Atlanta, GA. After a few years, Mr. Johnny B. accepted a better position, moved back home, and become the first African- American Mail Carrier in Albany, GA. He volunteered in the community as one of the first coaches for the Carver Park Softball Little League and a Boy Scout Troop Leader, sponsored by The Joseph Odom American League Post # 512. He served as a member of this post for 62 years and was, once, elected as Senior Vice Legionnaire. He received Christ, under the divine leadership of his maternal grandfather and founding Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church pastor, the late Reverend Grant Edgar Hall. He has been a member of his church for 84 years, and served in many auxiliaries, most recently, as the Chairman of Trustees for 20 years, He was the oldest member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church and the last living descendant of the founding legacy of the church.
Mr. Johnny B leaves a legacy of love and faith from his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Lillian Odessa Boone; (4) cherished children, Ms. Carolyn Howard, Grayson, GA, Dr. Valerie (Terry) Overstreet-Thomas, Conyers, GA, Mr. Johnny (Gwendolyn) Boone Jr, Albany , GA; Dr. Velma (Gregory) Fitzhugh, Fayetteville, GA; (5) fearless grandchildren Mr. Gregory (Teresa) Howard, Albany, GA; Mr. Garry (Ella) Howard, Albany, GA; Mrs. Ashley Michelle Smith, Atlanta, GA; Mr. Michael Jamal Overstreet Jr, Stockbridge, GA; Mr. Johnny Boone III, Albany, GA; Ms. Noelle Mobley, Fayetteville, GA; (3) glorious great grandchildren; Mr. Brandon Lawson, Ft. Hood Texas; Ms. Cierra Howard, Atlanta, GA, Master Ashton Michael Smith, Atlanta, GA. (3) sisters in law, Mrs. Idonia Reynolds, Detroit MI; Mrs. Linda Barnhart, Austell, GA; Mrs. Rea Bonhart, Conyers, GA and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
