John Whittington , 80 Feb 11, 1942 - Mar 6, 2022 John Whittington , 80 Feb 11, 1942 - Mar 6, 2022 John Maurice Whittington, 80, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Sunday March 6, 2022 at Doey's House in Hagerstown.
He was born on February 11, 1942 in Frederick, Maryland to the late Henry A Whittington and Hazel Louise (Kershner) Whittington.
John worked for the Washington County Hospital for over 30 years, servicing televisions. He was known as "Big John" to the hospital staff who always needed his assistance. John also worked as a correctional officer for over 30 years. He was a United States Veteran, having served in the Army from 1961-1964 in Germany. He was actively involved in the scouting world as an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 100 and was also a member of the First Christian Church in Hagerstown, MD. John was sociable, friendly, and everyone he met just loved being around him, especially his social group at Panera Bread.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry A Whittington and Hazel Louise (Kershner) Whittington. Also preceding John in death are his 3 brothers, Henry Whittington, Frank Whittington, and Roy Whittington, along with his brothers-in-law Roger Rhodes and Walter Warman.
John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Brigitte. Also surviving John are his children, Sabine Barr, Cynthia and husband Walter Ecker, and John Michael Whittington; his grandchildren, Amanda Barr, Devon Little, Cheyenne Little, and Aaron Little. He is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy Rhodes and Diana Whittington; and his sisters-in-law, Betty Whittington, Judy Whittington, Joyce Whittington, and Erika Warman.
Funeral arrangements are held with Potomac Valley Cremation Center, 305 N Potomac Street, Hagerstown MD. Visitation will take place on Friday March 11, 2022 from 4-7pm with a memorial service at 7pm. Reverend David Britt will officiate.
