John R. Began 89, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on March 2nd after a short illness. John was born in Gastonia, NC on March 3, 1935 to Edward and Jackie Began. He attended Catholic High School in Virginia Beach and was a graduate of the University of Dayton, Ohio. He was employed by the Diamond Department Store and owner of Began-Fulwider Shoes in Charleston, West Virginia. He was an avid runner who competed in the New York Marathon and Charleston, WV Distance Run, in which one year he won in his age division. He was a loyal WVU football and basketball fan who enjoyed watching their games. Also, in his later years, he enjoyed baking, traveling and daily swims with his fellow Villagers, where he met many good friends.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Supcoe (Chris), Donna Powden, Lori Burns (Dillon) and very dear friend Judy Bjerke. Grandchildren, Andrew Supcoe, Stephanie Hoyer (Drew), Michael Chambers, Tara Kline (Scott) and Debbie Ann Began. Great grandchildren, Brooke and Lewis. He is also survived by several sisters-in-law and their husbands along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn and daughter, Deborah Surbaugh, parents Edward and Jackie Began, and sister, Betty. Redmond.
Per his wishes, he was cremated, and a graveside service will be held at a later date at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens, Ocala, Florida. Roberts of Ocala, Downtown Chapel, is entrusted with the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be posted on the funeral home website.
