John DeWayne Powell, 91, of Lecompton, died Friday, October 21, 2022 at Oakley Place Assisted Living in Topeka. John was born March 11, 1931 at Topeka, the son of Gilbert Wayne and Laura Burel Morriss. He was a 1950 graduate of Highland Park High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean war from 1952 to 1954, stationed in Japan. He was a farmer and raised cattle and pigs for many years. He also worked many years as an electrical contractor and was a co-owner and operator of OK Johnson Electric Company in Topeka, retiring in September 2006. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Union Local #304 in Topeka, a life member of V.F.W. Post #852 of Kansas, a life member of Lecompton Historical Society and a life member of the Lecompton Odd Fellows Lodge.
He married Marva Lee Kreipe on July 5, 1952 in the Oakland community of Topeka, She survives at the home. Other survivors include four daughters, Jenny Lee (Dale McGrath) Powell, Boyle, Jolene (Bill) Bickel, Meriden, Julie Powell, Lecompton, Jill (Ron Miller) Powell, Perry, five grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Janice Powell and Shirley Combs.
Funeral Service at 3:00 PM, Friday, October 28, 2022 at Lecompton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery, Big Springs. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Barnett Family Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
