John W. More of Venice, Florida passed away March 5, 2022. He was born in Bayonne, New Jersey on August 1, 1939.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Marian Moore; brother, Frederick Moore; and nephew, Terrance More.
He is survived by wife of 53 years, Nancy Moore; three children and their spouses, Matthew (Stephanie) Moore, Sarah (Michael) Janicki, and David (Laura) Moore; grandchildren, Elle Bisheimer, Anna and Abigail Janicki, and Mallory Moore; as well as nieces, Mallory (Kevin) Kennedy and Merrill Seyler.
Dr. Moore attended public schools in Bayonne, New Jersey. He was the first in his family to attend college; earning degrees from Reuters University (B.S.), Indiana University (M.S.), and The Pennsylvania State University (Ed.D). He dedicated his career to public education, often stating that education was the great equalizer in American Society. His career in academia extended over four decades. He served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at University of Vermont, Executive Vice President of Old Dominion University, President of California State University Stanislaus and President of Indiana State University.
During his academic career, Dr. Moore served as the coordinator of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (ASSCU) New Presidents Academy. He also held significant leadership roles in the Society for College and Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Dr. Moore was appointed by the Governor of Indiana to the Indiana Education Roundtable, the Indiana Economic Development Commission, and the Board of the Directors of the Indiana Business Modernization and Technology Corporation. He served as Chair of the Indiana Conference on Higher Education, the Board of Directors of the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System, and the Indiana Council for Quality Teaching for Student Learning.
Dr. Moore was named a " Sagamore of the Wabash", the most prestigious recognition awarded to a citizen of Indiana, and retired from Indiana State University with the title of President Emeritus and Distinguished Trustee Professor. He received a Doctor of Laws honorary degree from Indiana State University, and the University's Welcome Center bears his name. Dr. Moore was inducted into the Pennsylvania State University's Society of Distinguished Alumni in 2001.
Dr. Moore was a private consultant for fifteen years as President and CEO of Penson Associates, Inc., a, higher education administration consulting and research firm. Dr. Moore is the author of "Presidential Succession and Transitions: Beginning, Ending, and Beginning Again" and co-authored "Servant Leadership and the Art of Teaching", among many other publications related to his consulting practice.
John and Nancy moved to Venice, Florida in 2005 and he continued to be active in the community. Dr. Moore convened the Mover's & Shakers, a learning and support community affiliate with the Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson's. He also supported the Plantation Golf and Country Club, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Plantation Community Foundation. He was active in sports and fitness throughout his life, an avid golfer and fan of baseball, soccer, football, and basketball.
Throughout his life, John was most proud of his role as loving husband and father. He passed away peacefully surrounded by Nancy, Matthew, Sara, and David; who loved him dearly.
