John R. "Jack" McCoy, age 79, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024 in Madison, WI. He was born in Lena, IL on July 30, 1945, the son of Robert and Mary (Gile) McCoy.
Jack grew up in the small town of Shullsburg, WI. While he moved to Darlington a few years after he was out of school, his heart never really left Shullsburg. The better part of his professional career was spent working there. Jack was a second-generation family business owner of McCoy Group. He was an instrumental figure in helping the business grow into one of the premier transportation companies in North America. All of his kids worked in the business......something he was very proud of. With the help of his longtime partner and brother Mike, he was successful in transitioning the business to the third generation. Under today's ownership the business continues to break barriers, reach new heights, and demonstrate commitment to the communities in which it operates.
Outside of Jack's professional career, he enjoyed various outdoor activities, but had a particular passion for fishing trips with his grandsons. He was also an avid supporter of the Wisconsin Badgers football, basketball, and hockey teams for most of his life. His entire family enjoyed a lot of special moments together following the Badgers, including attending multiple Rose Bowls and Final Fours. While it had been a few years since he teed it up, he was also an avid golfer for most of his life. Jack and Susan enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona......almost as much as they enjoyed spending an evening on the porch listening to the rain and a Brewers game.
Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Susan, and their children, Lisa (Bryan) Bechtoldt, Jon (Dawn) McCoy, and Brian (Renee) McCoy. He also leaves behind a proud legacy through his grandchildren, Max Bechtoldt, Tyler (fianc?e Hailey Beck) Zahn, Ethan Zahn, Hannah McCoy, Morgan McCoy, Grant McCoy, Jackson McCoy, and Noah McCoy. He is also survived by his mother, Mary, along with his siblings, Nancy Donnell, Michael (Judy) McCoy, Robert (Jeanann) McCoy, and Denise (Larry) Shane. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and other extended family members. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Robert, and his niece, Kelsey.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10 from 3:00-7:00 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 226 W Church St, in Jack's hometown of Shullsburg, WI. The funeral service is scheduled for Friday, October 11 at 11am at the same location with Rev. Jorge Ochoa and Rev. Nick McElrath of First Baptist Church in Darlington, WI officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg. The Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg is serving the family.
