Mr. Martin, 98, of Charlotte died December 10th at Sharon Towers. Born in Greenville, SC, he was a son of Lillie Maude McCurry Martin and Abner Grady Martin. John is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Mary Elizabeth Anderson Martin, son John Anderson Martin, wife, Patricia, Charlotte, NC, and son in law Robert Adger Bowen III, Macon, GA. Mr. Martin's two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Martin and Catherine Ann Martin Bowen preceded him in their unrelated deaths in 2008. Mr. Martin dearly loved his five grandchildren, John Anderson Martin, Jr., Matthew Carlton Martin, Elizabeth Carlton Bowen, Mary Adger Bowen, and Rudolf Anderson Bowen.
Mr. Martin attended the Greenville, SC City Schools, the University of Iowa, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Graduate School of Business as a member of The Fifth Executive Group.
Mr. Martin was a World War II veteran. His business career was in the Textile Industry; Chief Industrial Engineer Judson Mills, Industrial Engineering Manager J.P. Stevens, Executive Vice President Bibb Manufacturing, President Sales and Service American Schlafhorst Company from which he retired in 1988.
Mr. Martin was a founding member and deacon of the John Knox Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC, deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Macon, GA, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Myrtle Beach, SC, and at the time of his death was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC. He was a 60+year Masonic member of Recovery Lodge Number 5, Greenville, SC and a Scottish Rite Brother. He was a former member of Idle Hour Country Club, Carmel Country Club, and The Poinsett Club.
A graveside service will be at 11:00 December 14th at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC. Dr. Gordon Turnbull-Senior Minister of John Knox Presbyterian Church will officiate, and Mackey Mortuary is assisting the family.
