John Courtenay Long, 98, of Middletown, husband of Betty (Chase) Wakeman Long for thirty-three years, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at Wadsworth Glen. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Edgar and Ethel (Frisbie) Long.
A graduate of Cheshire Academy and Duke University, his last position was that of Regional Sales Manager at the Ohio Life Insurance Company in Cleveland, Ohio. A three year veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army Amphibious Forces in Casablanca, Anzio and Southern France. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
John was a genuinely kind person and always remembered to express his gratitude for life and the good deeds of others. He loved all the children of his blended family very much.
Along with his wife, John is survived by his four children from his first marriage, William B.H. Long (Dolores) of Willowick, OH, Richard C. Long of Painesville, OH, Nancy L. Voskuijl (Erik) of the Weiringerwerf, Netherlands and David S. Long of Painesville, OH; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his first wife, Dulce Brenner Long and his son, Robert L. Long.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, where full military honors will be accorded. A live video stream will be available via Doolittle Funeral Home FaceBook page. Following CDC guidelines, a private reception will follow for family only.
