John Juban, 97, a lifelong resident of Ludlow passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Bradford Manor, Bradford, Pennsylvania. John was born at home in Ludlow, Pennsylvania on July 9, 1924, the son of John and Eva (Molodij) Juban who immigrated from Galicia, Austria Hungary. He was baptized at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ludlow, Pennsylvania. He was a 1942 graduate of Ludlow High School and 1952 Graduate of Clarion State College. John honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946. He was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Sheffield since 1924 where he was involved in many capacities, which included Kurator, usher and epistle reader for many years, past president of St. Michael’s Cemetery Association and he was instrumental in erecting a Veterans Memorial at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
John was a member of many organizations which included St. John Ukrainian Lodge No. 53; Boy Scouts, Life, Troop 43 Ludlow; American Legion Post 489 past president and member since 1946; VFW Post 8755, member since 1952; Member, Park Manager and President of Wildcat Park (Ludlow) since 1942; Hamilton Township (Ludlow) Auditor; PARSC member since 1984 (PA Retirement Program).
John was employed by J.G. Leather Co (Ludlow Tannery) and Kane Area High School from 1952 till 1984. John was actively involved in sports, playing basketball for Ludlow High School and three years as lead scorer for Northern Tier and elected three years as All-Star for Northern Tier. In 1942 he was named McKean County Class B basketball player of the year by Olean Times Herald, and he played baseball for Clarion State for four years. He played baseball and managed the Ludlow Wildcats for twenty years. He also was an avid golfer, having belonged to Kinzua Golf Club, the Kane Country Club and Pine Acres. John took great pride in his knowledge of family histories in the Ludlow area and at St. Michael’s Church and related that knowledge to second and third generations of those families.
Left behind to cherish his memory is a sister, Irene (Robert) Goldthwaite of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois as well as nieces and nephews, Tom Cuthbertson, Dan (Charlotte) Cuthbertson, Carol (Jim) Vinca, Patricia (Mike) Cuthbertson, Nick Jubon, John Jubon, Ron (Julie) Jubon and Denise Jubon. He is further survived by eight great nieces and nephews and four great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva Juban, his brothers Nicholas (Rita) and George, his sisters Catherine, Anna, and Mary (Robert) Cuthbertson and his niece Jennifer Jubon Sias.
John’s family will welcome family and friends Friday, June 3, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Borden Funeral Home of Sheffield, Pennsylvania. The American Legion, Post 489 of Ludlow, Pennsylvania will offer a service to honor John at 7 p.m. A Funeral of Divine Liturgy will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church of Sheffield with Father David Bosnich as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Sheffield.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made to St. Michael’s Cemetery Association.
