John (Jack) Maguire, 74, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday, June 22nd at Courtyard Healthcare of Goshen. Jack was born on February 12, 1947 in Somerville, MA to Francis E. and Helen E. (Ahern) Maguire. He graduated from Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, MA class of 1964.
After high school, he went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Marine Corp., serving from 1965 - 1969 in Platoon 2028. Jack was stationed in Washington DC where he was on the Silent Drill Team as well as serving on the honor guard for President Johnson.
It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Terry L. Carl and they were married on October 21, 1967. Shortly after Jack served in Vietnam where he received two purple hearts.
When he returned, he was employed by Polaroid Corporation in Waltham,MA until he retired in 1989 and moved to the Michiana area from Westford, MA. In 2016 he was honored by the Mayor and Senator for his service with the Marines and in 2017 he took a trip with the Honor Flight Network to Washington DC.
In his early years he enjoyed referring hockey, umpiring baseball and loved his Bruins, Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics. He was head coach for both his kids baseball teams and loved to take family trips. The thing he loved most of all was being a grandfather. He adored his grandchildren.
Jack spent his final days at Courtyard Healthcare in Goshen where the staff there took exeptional care of him. He had a special handshake with the staff that everyone knew. We are forever grateful.
Jack is survived by his loving daughter, Sandra L. (Cecil) Miller of South Bend, granddaughter, Marisa L. Maguire and a great grandson Quentin R. Maguire. He is also survived by his siblings, Deborah E. (Daniel) McKeever of Rockport, MA, Barbara M. Gilbert of Weymouth, MA and Sister in Law Camille Maguire of Waltham, MA as well as several nieces and nephews he loved dearly. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Terry, his son, John D. Maguire, brother, Francis E Maguire II, brother-in-law, William Gilbert, as well as his his parents.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, June 28th from 4:00 until 8:00pm at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 SR 23, South Bend and one hour prior to the service. A service celebrating Jack's life will be held on Tuesday, June 29th at 11:00am in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens of Osceola at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Jack's name to the Honor Flight Network or to the charity of donor's choice.
