John Cleburne "JC" Humphrey departed this Earth on June 27, 2021. He spent his last days surrounded by prayers, family, love, and a lifetime of memories.
JC was born March 17, 1926 to James and Lois Humphrey in Dover, Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate during World War II and saw combat in the Pacific. Afterwards, he met Virginia Gamble, fell in love, and they married May 9, 1940.
He was a devoted Christian, a family man, and a true patriot. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Los Fresnos and later the First Baptist Church of Combes.
JC worked hard as a farmer and with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During his time with the Soil Conservation Service, he improved many acres of farm and ranch land, thus yielding greater crops and better livestock. He served as a member of the Los Fresnos School Board where he worked diligently to improve academics and athletics programs for students and teachers alike.
In his leisure time, JC enjoyed baseball. He was quite skilled at it and played semi-professional ball. He also enjoyed square dancing and round dancing.
JC raised three children, teaching them to be godly. He taught and led by example. He was honest, hardworking, loving, kind, and fair. There is much more to be said about JC; he will be sorely missed. JC, you will always be loved and your life's example will live on.
JC is preceded in death by his son, John C. Humphrey Jr.; father, James Humphrey; mother, Lois Humphrey; brothers, Eugene Humphrey and Bernard Humphrey; and sister, Ruby Nell Lewis.
