Mr. John P. Hine, age 89, of Rome, died peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024, with family and friends by his side.
Mr. Hine was born May 25, 1935, in Rome, Georgia, the son of Edward West Hine, Sr. and Nellie Shiflett Hine. He grew up in Rome, graduated from Darlington School and Georgia Tech with honors. He served two years active duty as an officer in the US Army.
After release from active duty, he worked at Trend Industries as a Textile Engineer. In 1973, he left Trend to establish Pharr Yarns of Georgia where he served as Executive Vice President and as President for 23 years.
Mr. Hine was a member and past Junior and Senior Warden of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, and he was actively involved in the community. Mr. Hine served on the boards and held positions of leadership in many professional and charitable organizations. His service included membership on the Boys and Girls Club of Rome Board for 37 years, as Chairman of the Board of Citizens First Bank (Synovus) for 11 years, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity helping to build 25 homes. Other involvement was with the Family Resource Center, Saint Peter's Church, and as a member of the Rome Exchange Club for 54 years.
He received a Heart of the Community Award in 1995 and the Board of Governors Award in 2003.
He was elected to the Georgia Tech Academy of Distinguished Alumni in 1995, was recognized as Darlington's Distinguished Alumnus for 2009, and named a Life Trustee in 2010.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Sylvia Street Hine, who was the love of his life, three children, Judith Marie Hine, Susan Hine Duke (David), and John P. Hine, Jr. (Rebecca), seven grandchildren, Edward Duke (Lauren), Camille Shaw (Taylor), Sara Katherine White (Isaac), Emma Duke Ferrugia (Joey), Will Beecham, Julia Hine, Addie Duke, and one great grandchild, Noa Jane White, his sister-in law, Barbara Briley, and a number of cherished nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, in Daniel Hall, on Friday October 11, 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, with the Reverends John Foster Herring and David Boyd officiating. A private burial at Myrtle Hill Cemetery will be held prior to the service, and the family will receive friends immediately following the service in Daniel Hall at the church.
Special appreciation goes to the caring staff at The Renaissance Marquis, and to Tracee Hagood, RN., and the dedicated team at Heyman Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Peter's Episcopal Church.
