John C. Harvey, "Jake", 84, of Whitesboro, NY passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Utica.
He was born on September 5, 1937 in Nanticoke, PA, a son of the late Christopher and Helen (Chebro) Harvey. On January 23, 1960, he was united in marriage to Marie J. Negosh at St. Joseph Church in Nanticoke, PA and shared a blessed union of 51 years until her passing on August 18, 2011. He was also predeceased by his sons, Christopher and Richard Scott Harvey and brothers and sisters-in-law.
John was a 1955 graduate of Nanticoke High School and furthered his education at Wilkes College pursing a degree in Commerce & Finance. He continued as starting catcher at Wilkes University in Wilkes Barre, PA. During the summers of his college years, he coached the Hanover Yankees Little League where he led the team to its first 3 consecutive championships.
In 1959, he began his career with the Boy Scouts of America. Serving along the east coast in Wilmington, Delaware, Baltimore, Maryland, Providence, Rhode Island & Utica, New York in multiple capacities. He was the one and only Scout Executive in the Land of the Oneidas Council. He was involved in Scouting for over 50 years, retiring in Utica after 43 years as a mentor and professional Executive.
From college throughout his Scouting career; he still managed, coached and assisted in a game he loved; baseball; from Little League, to Babe Ruth in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York. As Manager of Jake's TV Babe Ruth team in North Kingstown, RI; the team won the 1975 & 1976 Championships.
He also volunteered for Troop 22 Davisville, RI. In 1981, he was recognized by the RI House of Representatives for his leadership and dedication to youth. He was a Silver Beaver Recipient, a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow; and received the James E. West Fellowship Award. He remained active in the Scouting Community serving on the Executive Board, Finance Committee, and Chairman of the Council Endowment Committee once retired.
He adored traveling, golfing, watching Dancing with the Stars; and yearly vacations with his family. John was an avid reader and sports fan. His favorite teams were the Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Orioles and the Penn State Nittany Lions. In his younger years, he coached his son's baseball teams and was also a baseball umpire.
Surviving are his grandchildren, Brianna Harvey, Christopher Harvey, Corinne Harvey and Cassandra Harvey; daughters-in-law, Kim (Fiance, Ed Angell) Harvey and Kirsten Brown Harvey; sister, Sandra Sadowski, brothers, Richard (Joyce) Harvey and Glenn Harvey; sister-in-law, Rita Negosh and several nieces and nephews.
John's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Grand at Utica for all their wonderful care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Saturday, August 27, 2022 from 9-11 am at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 40 Main St., Whitesboro. A Memorial Service will commence immediately following the visitation. Additional calling hours, processional & burial at a date to be determined will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland, RI.
Flowers are respectfully omitted. Donations in John's memory can be made to the American Heart Association or your local Boy Scout Council.
