Help us celebrate John Franklin! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember John Franklin.
John Franklin Murphy of Willbrook Plantation, Pawleys Island, SC escaped his earthly bonds today to be with his heavenly father after a long battle with cancer. John is survived by his loving wife "Cissy" Murdaugh, fianc? and wife for 32 years; Two sons Stephen (Sherri) of Easley, SC, and Keith (Cindy) of South Haven MI; Three Granddaughters; Cleo, Shelby and Shannon; A Sister Brenda Fentress (Duke) of Raleigh, NC; Brother Donald (Maureen) of Pollocksville, NC; brother Greg (Starr) of Minnesott Beach, NC, and numerous nieces & nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Frank & Naomi of Pollocksville, NC where he was born & reared.
John proudly served in the US Air Force on active duty for more than eight years as an Aeromedical evacuation technician. His travels took him from Alaska to Ethiopia and many points between. John was a graduate of the "School of Aerospace Medicine" and the "Army Combat Medical School". John, also, attended the University of Tennessee.
Following his Air Force service, John enjoyed two careers: 25 years in insurance Services in Fayetteville, NC and founding and managing Carolina Shutter & Blind Company in Pawleys Island, SC for 20 years. While living in Fayetteville, John was involved in North Carolina Governor Jim Holshouser's campaign/election, was first appointed to the NC Highway Commission and was later appointed Deputy Secretary of The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs under the Holshouser Administration.
Fishing & gardening were a source of great enjoyment for John, but he was happiest in his woodworking shop covered in sawdust or shagging the night away in North Myrtle Beach. He was inducted into the Fayetteville Area Shag Association Hall of Fame. He was always quick with a joke (not always politically correct) and surrounded himself with people with a sense of humor.
John was a Master Mason from 1977 until his passing and a founding member of The Abbey at Pawleys Island where he was blessed to serve as a lay eucharistic minister, lay reader and Junior Warden.
Celebration of Life Service will be Two O'clock August 7, 2021, at The Abbey, 46 Gathering Lane in Litchfield Plantation, Pawleys Island, SC with the Rev. Bruce Cote traveling to Pawleys Island to officiate the service with Rector Allen Hughes.
