John F. Doehner, 77, of Manchester, NH, passed away on Monday, November 29th, 2021, after a brave battle with multiple health problems culminating with COVID-19.
John was born in Newark, NJ, the son of Frank Doehner and Helen Doehner (Noll). He told tales of Newark, including taking buckets to the tavern to get beer for Sunday dinner. Later, upon moving to New Providence, NJ, he was an altar boy, Boy Scout, and occasional basketball player. John truly excelled academically at Seton Hall Prep, where he won awards for debating and chemistry. He also began his lifelong love of the literature of JRR Tolkien.
After some college work at Boston College and Seton Hall University, John began a career that took many twists and turns. At the RCA corporation, he went from installing pay TVs in hospitals in Staten Island to representing GE at the largest Telecom trade show in the country. From GE, he was recruited by a former boss to Unisys. While there, he worked on two extensive projects in the Rockies of Colorado and in Bellingham, Washington. His final career move came in 1989 when Summa Four of Manchester (now @Comm) brought him on board. He spent until his death working on high-tech telecommunications projects and solutions.
John tirelessly served his community. While in Cherry Hill, NJ, he was a soccer coach, a soccer league commissioner, an avid blood donor, a lector, a Eucharistic minister, and delivered communion to the sick. When John moved to Epsom, NH, he helped form a regional soccer league, coached and refereed soccer, served on the school board, was an Oddfellow, and served as a lector. He also began his volunteering with the Scouts as a Cubmaster. He volunteered for the Scouts at both the district and council level by training new leaders. In 2011, John was awarded the Silver Beaver in recognition of his dedication to the Scouts. Finally, he joined his sons in their involvement with the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, recognized as an unofficial member due to his German heritage. He was a loyal lector at St. Joseph's Cathedral.
John loved fly-fishing, reading, trivia, driving with family, cooking exotic meals, a good pun, cycling, stimulating conversation, the clothing of LL Bean, Germany in the World Cup, and any of the "NCIS," "Law and Order," or "CSI" series. He would camp but greatly preferred beds.
John is survived by his sons, Brian and Timothy of Manchester, NH and Francis Doehner of Atlanta, brother George Doehner and wife Nancy of Naples, FL and sisters Patricia McGonegal and husband Thomas of Acton, MA, and Mary Hourihan and husband Peter of Washington Township, NJ.
