Lt. Colonel John David Haskins
Join us in celebrating John Haskins — please share your stories and photos.
John was born in Platteville, Wisconsin to Ivan and Hazel Haskins. He was their second child. John had an older sister, Joyce, and later got two more sisters, Judy and Karen.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Haskins, his sister Judy Haskins, and his 5 children, Rick, Sherri, David, Laura, and Paul, and his nephew Mike Keinast. John's family at his passing included 12 grandchildren (Nick, Hannah, Melyssa, Travis, Chrissy, Megan, Maddie, Courtney, Haley, Amber, Brit, and Sam) and 3 great grandchildren (Lily, Lucas, and Jade).
John grew up in Platteville and completed High School in Juneau, WI. He entered Platteville Mining School where he completed 3 years before he married Joyce Weakley. In 1954 he was drafted into the US Army and was posted in France for 2 years. When he returned to the US he completed his degree program and worked for an oil company as a wildcatter for a few years.
In that time, believing they could not have children of their own, John and Joyce adopted Rick Haskins in 1959. In 1961 they found they could have children after all and soon Sherri was born. Followed quickly by David in 1963, and Laura in 1965.
In the meantime, John had joined the US Air Force so he could pursue an advanced degree. Through the Air Force Institute of Technology John obtained a Masters degree in 1967 and the family was stationed in Japan for a 3 years where Paul was born in 1969.
In 1973, John met Elizabeth and the two were quickly inseparable. Married in 1974, John and Liz built a wonderful life together. John finished his career in the Air Force and started another as a consultant in 1980. He continued that work for years, "retiring" a few times before it stuck! In the meantime he and Liz traveled the world, raised a great dog named Joz, and built new relationships with the kids.
Through the years, John was there for Liz, their families, and their friends. John will be sorely missed.
