Memorial service for John Larry Cormack "Cornbread", 83, of Conroe, Texas will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. in The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors. Larry was born on August 28, 1941 to John Raymond and Gladys (Womack) Cormack in Des Arc, Arkansas. He passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 in The Woodlands, Texas.
Larry was preceded in death by his sons, George Michael Cormack (infant) and Larry Keith Cormack in January of 2024; five siblings and a host of other dear family members.
He is survived by his loving family: Beloved wife of 39 years, Patti Cormack; daughter, Penny Darlene Roberts; grandson, Gage L. Roberts and granddaughter, Grace R. Roberts; brother, James Cormack and wife, Kay; and sister, Michelle Cormack. Larry is also survived by nieces, nephews, other family members as well as many caring friends.
Growing up on a farm in Des Arc and being part of a large family of ten instilled a strong work ethic and sense of teamwork that Larry would carry with him throughout his life. He played both football and basketball in high school and was a stand-out player for both teams, but most importantly, during this time Larry began his lifelong passion for performing music. He graduated from Des Arc high school in 1959.
A couple of years after high school, he met, and married Patsy J. Lane and they had two children, Penny and Keith. Larry moved his family of four to Lewisville, Texas for work and then arrived at Conroe in 1973. This is where he stayed for the rest of his life. His beautiful life was full of love and caring friendships.
He worked at Lufkin-Conroe Telephone company for many years where he met lifelong friends. Larry, Cornbread to his friends, spent decades volunteering to auction at benefits throughout Montgomery County. His unselfish actions helped many families in need, some whom he had never met before. He also auctioned numerous cookoffs in and around Conroe. Larry owned and D.J.'d at numerous bars in and around Montgomery County and was a great singer!
The name Cornbread came from his earlier days of shooting pool. He was very good at it. After work one day he and some co-workers went to play pool. A young man who challenged him, remarked that Larry shot like the pool player "Cornbread Red" of Louisiana. His coworkers heard that name and the rest is history.
After his children graduated high school, in July of 1985, he married the love of his life, Patti Myers Cormack in Jasper, Texas.
On family nights, the infamous Karaoke machine would most certainly make an appearance! He continued performing as long as he could until his cancer was diagnosed.
Larry loved to crappie fish in Lake Conroe during the early years in Conroe with his work buddies. He also was a team member of the Muy Grande Cookers at the MOCO BBQ Cookoff for many, many years and was their in-house DJ. Larry was always most proud of his 27-year membership of the Conroe Masonic Lodge #748.
Laughter was always his medicine, and he did this with such ease. He had a knack for making people feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations.
He was always the life of the party or as Penny would say, "Dad was the PARTY!"
Larry loved his Razorbacks but most of all he cherished his friendships with his Des Arc class of 1959.
Cornbread will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Conroe Masonic Lodge #748.
