Guardesman Died Last Night in Hospital In Taylorville
John Charles, 23, a member of the Combat Train of the local military establishment, who was accidentally shot in both legs last Thursday night and underwent an operation for amputation of his left leg Saturday died last night about midnight in the Taylorville hospital. Word from Taylorville this morning was that the body would be brought to Monmouth this afternoon, and that Captain Ray Nevis and Captain Franz A. Ahlstrand would accompany the body and member of the young man's family home.
Charles was shot by accident by Lawrence Messenger who was giving the your guardsman instructions relative to the use of a rifle just before he was to go on guard duty. An Associated Press story from Taylorville this morning stated that the military board exonerated Messenger.
Every effort was made to save the life of the your man, and since the operation Saturday he was given four blood transfusions. His condition was a little better Sunday night but yesterday he weakened rapidly and passed away shortly before midnight.
A complete sketch of his live and announcement of the time of the funeral will be given tomorrow.
