LAURINBURG, NC - John Alexander "John Alec" Caudill, 23, died on Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Winston-Salem, NC.
Born in Scotland County, NC, on December 3, 1999, he was the firstborn son of William Samuel "Bill" and Anne McLean Caudill.
John Alec was a member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church and active in its youth program particularly in attending Montreat Summer Youth Conferences. He was a Life Scout in Boy Scouts of America Troop 420.
He was a 2018 graduate of Scotland High School (SHS), where in his senior year he was drum captain for the Fighting Scots marching band and was named to the percussion section of the all-state honors concert band. John Alec was also a member of the first SHS swim team and member of the National Honor Society. He was also recognized as overall winner at the University of North Carolina (UNC) - Pembroke's Juried High School Art Exhibition in 2017 and runner-up in 2016.
John Alec was a former member of the St. Andrews University Pipe Band and the Jamestown (NC) Pipes and Drums. He also participated in the Laurinburg-Oban Sister City Exchange Program in 2017 visiting Oban, Argyll, Scotland for two weeks, as well as visiting Scotland on a family trip in 2016.
He attended UNC - Greensboro for one year and was preparing to graduate in May 2023, from the UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA) - School of Filmmaking in Winston-Salem. For the past two years his short films were selected and featured in the UNCSA's "Best in Show" end of year presentation.
During the Summer of 2022, he completed a paid internship with Discovery Channel's "Gold Rush" in the Yukon Territory of Canada with his work being seen on the current season of the show.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, William Jake and Margaret Kell Caudill.
Surviving are his parents of Laurinburg, listed above; a brother, Daniel MacQueen Caudill of Laurinburg and Chapel Hill, NC; grandparents, W. LeGette and Charlotte Baxley McLean of Laurinburg; aunt, Marie McLean Tracy (Jim) of Asheville, NC; cousins, Kate and Grace Tracy, also of Asheville; and numerous friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, 600 West Church Street. A private family burial will precede the service.
The family is receiving friends at their home, 1202 Dogwood Lane, Laurinburg.
