Dr. John Francis Brown passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 22, 2021. He was born on June 6, 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Born the second of seven sons to Louis and Dorothy (Guarnera) Brown. With a few family stops in between, John landed in Lubbock, Texas as a young teenager, helping the family early on with his paper route. John joined the Naval Reserves in 1949. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1950 and attended Texas Technological College before reporting to the Naval Aviation Cadet program. He married June Cook in 1954. John earned his Navy Wings of Gold in 1955 and was assigned to VA-42 in Virginia, and operated from various carriers flying the AD-1 Skyraider during multiple Navy cruises. Upon transfer to the Navy Reserves, John obtained the necessary college courses from Texas A&M to enter the University of Texas Dental School in Houston, Texas. Upon graduation from dental school John moved his family to Lubbock. He interned with Dr. James Reynolds before opening his own practice as an orthodontist. He was the first to bring TMJ pain management to the panhandle, eastern New Mexico and southern Oklahoma areas. After retiring from his practice, he just couldn't stay away from the work completely. He would provide best practices consulting services for upcoming orthodontists and would fill in for orthodontists as requested. John married Kay Woods in 1990. John continued his passion for flying late into his life. He was an avid golfer, traveling wherever necessary to play! He was on the Lubbock Board of Health, helped design and implement the Lubbock ISD Dental Reimbursement Plan and was the President of the Lubbock Country Club in 1996. John was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Dorothy Brown, brothers Bruce Brown, Vince Brown, Leo Brown and Tom Brown. John leaves his wife Kay Brown, brothers Mike Brown and Tim Brown; children James (Jim) R. Brown and wife Lorie; Catherine S. Brown; John C. (Chris) Brown and wife Julie and Peter S. Brown and wife Kim; stepdaughter Kelly (Woods) Leach and husband Robert; stepson Jay Woods; along with eleven grandchildren/step grandchildren and nine great grandchildren/step great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and their children. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army, the Elizabeth Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund in the College of Engineering at Texas Tech University, or a charity of your choice. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Bartley Funeral Home is providing the services.
