John Riley Barton, Jr, age 90 of Maryville, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020 after a courageous battle following a stroke in 2016. He was born in Rochelle, GA to the late John Riley Barton, Sr and Alice Chastain Barton. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by siblings Loyas (Theresa) Barton, Jerry (Carroll) Redish, Betty (Charles) Newman, Joyce (Frank) Beetner, and Oscar Barton and son-in-law Mike Moore. He was a former resident of Clewiston, FL and Etowah, TN. A 34-year educator with a BS and MS from Florida State University, he began his career in FL and served his last 22 years at McMinn County High School. He was a proud Korean Conflict veteran of the Army National Guard and the US Air Force. He was a 69-year and oldest member of the Sugarland 281 Masonic Lodge, Clewiston, FL. A life-long, faithful church member, he served many years as a deacon, committee and choir member. He was a member of Clark's Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church, attending regularly until his health declined in 2019. In addition to his educator career, he worked many years as a handyman and did lawn work, serving mostly the elderly. After retirement, he spent 20 years as an employee of The Track, Pigeon Forge, TN; often donning a Santa suit at Christmas. He was an avid fisherman and accomplished woodworker. Being active in his grandchildren's sports and activities, he was affectionately known by many as "Pops." He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Robinson Barton; children, Roseanne (Buster) Smith, Marietta, GA; Jo Ellen Moore, Maryville, TN; John R (Amanda) Barton, III, Sevierville, TN; grandchildren, Claire and Joe McCain, White Pine, TN; Brett Smith, Marietta, GA: Kaleb and Shelby Jo Moore, Marion, AR; Jessie Moore and fiance Cody Dauksch, Conway, AR; Mitch and Betsy Barton, Erwin, TN; Drew Barton, Signal Mtn, TN; great grandchildren, Jaxson and Asher McCain and Fenter Moore. He is also survived by several sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Whether you called him John, Mr. Barton, Mr. B, Poppy, Poppa or Pops, to know him was to love him. Steadfast, faithful and dependable, he never wavered in his faith, loved his family fiercely, always encouraged others with a wise word, a smile or maybe one of those famous winks. We will miss him but there is no doubt on April 27, he heard his savior say, "Well done my good and faithful servant."The family would like to thank the staff of Blount TCC for the loving care they provided in their mandated absence during the last six weeks of his life.
