Joel A. Carter, 91, loved, respected and admired husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2021. He was born in Sturgills, NC to the late William G. Carter and Malinda Darnell Carter.
Joel met his beloved wife, Jacqueline, at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC in 1948. They were married for over sixty-five years until Jacqueline's passing in 2016 and raised four daughters in Oak Ridge, TN, where they were members of First Christian Church. Dr. Carter enjoyed a long, distinguished career as a chemist with Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant and ORNL. He was a true family man as well as an avid traveler, gardener, bridge player and sports enthusiast.
Joel is survived by his four daughters whom he cherished - Karen Otten, Deborah Collins, Judy Ketron (Frank), and Lori Collazo (Alex), as well as his grandchildren - Stephanie Spivey (Chris), Logan Duncan (Angela), Megan Ketron and Molly Ketron, and his great grandchildren - Avery Duncan, Addalyn Duncan, Anna Spivey and Luke Spivey. Joel is also survived by his sister-in law - Pauline Carter, his nephew - Allen Miller (Mary), and his niece - Linda Seamster (Kenneth). In addition to his wife Jacqueline, Joel is predeceased by his grandson - Brandon Duncan (Jessica), his siblings - Mary Severt (Tom), Fanny Lee Miller (Glade) and Jerry Carter, and other loved ones.
A graveside memorial service is being planned for spring 2022 in remembrance of Joel and Jacqueline Carter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society or one's charity of choice.
