Joanne Vedvei, 91 of Hetland, SD died Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD. Joanne Hesby ws born on November 12, 1929 to Kenneth and Hazelle (Weidenkop) Hesby. She grew up in the Hetland area and attended 12 years of school, graduating from Hetland High School in 1947. She married Dwaine Nelson in December of 1947, the couple farmed near Hetland and had four children. She was a stay at home mom, sewing, reading, crocheting, knitting, cooking and baking were some of her pastimes. She enjoyed playing the piano. In 1971 she was employed at Northwestern National Bank in Lake Preston, working there for five years. She married Vernon Vedvei in 1974. They farmed in the North Preston area until retirement in 1992. They were married 47 years. In 1987 they became charter members of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington, SD. She leaves her husband, Vernon Vedvei, two sons, Tony (Paula) Nelson, Vermillion, SD and Kurt (Jodi) Nelson, Sinai, SD, one daughter, Anita Nelson (Brian Detmers) of Brookings. Seven grandchildren, Adam (Anna Carlson) Nelson, Chicago, IL, Kayla (Blake) Warren of Haslet, TX, Josh Nelson, Madison, SD, Breanne (Tim) Brezina, Sinai, SD, Jordan Nelson, Dell Rapids, SD, Alexis Thuringer, Brookings, SD, Makenzie Thuringer, Omaha, NE. Great-Grandchildren, Oliver Warren, Beckett Brezina, Baylon Brezina along with several nieces, nephew, and cousins. One sister, Helen (Wes) Jones of Lake Preston. She is preceded in death by a son, Richard Nelson, her parents, two brothers, David Hesby and Keith Hesby, two sisters-in-law, Joyce Williams and Signe Anderson. Funeral services for Joanne will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington with Pastor Aaron Olson officiating, burial will be in the Nordland Cemetery rural Arlington. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Monday, October 18, 2021 at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and preceding services in the church on Tuesday.
