Joanne L. Toth
Help us celebrate Joanne! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Joanne.
As a young woman Joanne began singing with her beautiful soprano voice that was a constant joy and gift to others for many, many years. Throughout her lifetime, her music was a common denominator between her, and her husband, Louis Toth. Joanne also had a strong fondness for airplanes, and would have adventures with her sister, Bette, to spend time watching airplanes take off and land. She was an avid gardener; amazing seamstress; and, enjoyed crocheting and knitting, as well. Many of her lovingly made baby blankets can still be found among family and friends.
At 16, Joanne met the love of her life, Louie, while he was working at a gas station. While Louis was overseas, during WWII, they remained close, and when he returned; and, she had graduated from high school, they married, in 1951. Shortly after they were married, the couple located to Marion, where Lou became the plant manager at Riverside Electric, and they made Marion their permanent home. After 91 years of living, Joanne went to her much anticipated heavenly home on July 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, in the same home she and Louie moved to in 1954.
Throughout her lifetime, Joanne always gave back to the community, and had a heart for serving others. She was a member of the Marion United Methodist Church, and choir her whole life. She served as the children's choir director; and, as the devoted church secretary for many years. She frequently shared her music for special occasions. She was an active member of the Rainbow Girls and the Order of the Eastern Star; a Cub and Boy Scout leader; Girl Scout leader; and, served on various boards and committees, in the community. She diligently supported and served on the Marion Library Board, and freely gave of her time as a liaison for the Salvation Army for many, many years. Her work experience included time in the Marion schools and she contributed a meaningful service to the community with her position as Coordinator for the Marion Senior Center. Due to her commitment to the community, and others she was presented the Citizen of the Year award by the Marion Chamber of Commerce.
Eventually, her love of flying and airplanes became a reality as she and Louie enjoyed several years adventuring together in their 1946 Ercoupe. They enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling together, as well. The two of them also shared their love of music by singing jointly with "Carolyn's Music Group", which focused on shut-ins and nursing homes. Joanne and Louie had a love and devotion to each other that was epic; one based on their faith in God, and their love of each other, family and friends. Joanne was extremely humble; generous; kind; loving, and forgiving. She was a woman who could "think out of the box," and always had a commonsense answer for seemingly complicated situations. She left us with her legacy of the great instruction found in John 13: 34-35: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Joanne Louise Toth is survived by her four children: Renee (Scott) Myers, of Traverse City; Robert (Bob) Toth, of Marion; David Toth, of Marion, and Diana Cole (Robert), of Florida. Joanne leaves 7 grandchildren: 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; grandson, Matthew Toth, and son-in-law Robert Cole; her parents and siblings.
