Joanne Brosius Magruder passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024 at the age of 94.
Joanne was born in Washington, D.C, on February 9, 1930. She was the only child of Dorothy Gott Brosius and Bernard Trundle Brosius.
Joanne grew up in Rockville, MD where she graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1948. She and her high school sweetheart, John Henry Magruder, were married at Christ Episcopal Church in 1950. They resided in the Rockville community and built a home where they raised their two children throughout their marriage.
Joanne demonstrated great creativity from an early age, including drawing, illustrating and painting in support of school plays and publications and decorating committees. She continued these artistic endeavors as a member of the Junior Woman's Club of Rockville. She created graphics and illustrated the cover of the Christ Episcopal's weekly Service Bulletin. She volunteered her talents yearly to decorate the Church Bazaars, creating wall paintings and table skirts to illustrate the theme each year. A particular point of pride was her contribution to the musical production of "Noah's Flood" in the 1970's, an adaption of Foye's Fluddle, where she painted huge head representing animals of the Ark that were carried high through the nave by children of the church. She became a Girl Scout leader and lover of camping in the wild. She and her family camped on extensive adventures throughout the United States and Canada.
Her chosen career of 18 years was early childhood education, teaching 3- and 4- year olds at Town and Country Day School in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Joanne began a new life with her second husband, Bob Paulus, marrying in 1982. They first settled in Chevy Chase, MD. Together they enjoyed their beloved Cairn Terriers, square dancing, collecting antiques, and travels through Europe. They enjoyed art, craft and music programs at John C. Campbell Folk School. Joanne volunteered as a mentor in Montgomery County and became a lifelong friend to her charge. She continued with her art in a serious commitment at Montgomery College with classes in watercolor painting. She also expanded her skills in many media such as mono printing and pastels, enjoying and becoming proficient in all.
In 1993 Joanne and Bob moved to Kent Island, MD but stayed only about a year. Finally. in 1994, they found Easton, MD and Joanne eagerly embraced the art scene in Easton. Joanne took her art out of the studio setting and into "En Plein Air" painting. She became a member of the Working Artists Forum and an active volunteer at the Academy of Arts in Easton. She was a founding contributor to the Easton Banner Program and every year her banner sold at the live auction that ended the Banner Program. She entered numerous art competitions at the Academy
and elsewhere and won prizes at many.
Joanne is survived by her daughter, Christi Lynn Magruder of Silver Spring, MD, her son Don Jeffrey Magruder of Glen Burnie, MD, her twin granddaughters Olivia and Madeline Magruder, of Los Angeles, CA, her ex-husband, John Magruder of Frederick, MD, and her husband, Bob Paulus of Easton, MD, step daughter Anne Paulus and step grandchildren Erin Daneker, Michael Chase, Kelly Husk and her children Ryder and Karleigh.
