Joan Babbitt Williams, 89, of East Longmeadow, MA and formerly of Lebanon, NH and Strafford, VT, beloved wife for 62 years of the late Carle Monroe Williams, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at her residence at East Village Place. Born in Dobbs Ferry, NY on March 30, 1931, daughter of the late Nathan Clark and Asenath May (Dunham) Babbitt, she was raised in Dobbs Ferry and Endicott, NY. After high school, Joan continued her education at Cornell University and transferred to Harpur College in Binghamton, NY, now SUNY Binghamton. Joan married her husband Carle while in college and the young couple had their first child during her senior year. Before staying home to raise their three children, Joan was an elementary school teacher. Her husband's work as a computer programmer brought the family throughout the United States and abroad. They lived in Woodstock, NY, Bedford, MA, Lewiston, ME, Tacoma, WA, Acton and Burlington, MA. Then, they spent five years in Germany before returning to live in Brewerton, NY, Hershey, PA, and Lawrenceville, NJ. Joan attended Rutgers University to complete a Master's Degree in Library Science. She worked for Mercer County Library until she and Carle moved to Strafford, VT where she was a librarian at Strafford Town Library. During the summer months, Joan and her family spent time at her family's "Edgewater" cottage on Lake Morey in Fairlee, VT. Having grown up on the lake herself, Joan raised her own children there during the summer months and, during her retirement, enjoyed spending summers there with grandchildren. In her spare time, Joan enjoyed traveling, genealogy research, reading and knitting. Joan and Carle were longtime members of the Unitarian Society of Strafford, VT. She is survived by her three children, Douglas Nathan Williams and his wife Virginia McDaniel of North Granby, CT, Christine Williams Browne of Princeton, NJ, Thomas Carle Williams and his wife Michelle Kupiec of Newbury, VT; and stepson, David Croker and his wife Cindy Croker of Elk Grove, CA; numerous grandchildren (two deceased) and many great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Charles Babbitt and Richard Leroy Babbitt. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
