Joan Penland McKinnon, daughter of the late Howard Penland and Ruth Penland O'Donnell, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. She was born in Greenville, SC on October 23, 1942. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, David McKinnon of Lilburn, GA, son Mark McKinnon (Wendy) of Bethlehem, GA, and daughter Christy Carrington (Alan) of St. Mary's, GA. Her family was the light of her life, including her grandchildren, David, Dalton, & Dillon McKinnon, Jordan (Ryan) Thompson, Allison & Nicholas Carrington, and two great granddaughters, Ada Joan Thompson, and arriving in February 2022, Ivy James Thompson. Other survivors include her twin sister, Jean Bagwell, sister Mary Ann (Chuck) Wright, sister-in-law, Becky Godfrey, and many nieces and nephews. Joan loved her family and prayed for them every day. Joan graduated from Greenville High School where she and her twin sister, Jean, were majorettes with the school band. She was an avid reader, including reading the Bible 15 times from cover to cover. She crocheted baby hats for newborns and sent hundreds of cards of encouragement to others. Joan was an active, long-time member of Lilburn First Baptist Church. She retired from Gwinnett County Schools. Joan and Dave enjoyed many years RV'ing with their children, especially to Myrtle Beach, Sc. They made memories travelling to England, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Canada, Hawaii, Nassau, Puerto Rico, and many places in the U.S.A. A memorial service will be held in the Lilburn/Tucker Chapel of Bill Head Funeral Home on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022 at 4:00PM. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 3:00PM. She will be buried at a later date at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude's Children Hospital in her memory.
