Jean (Sirna) Detrick, 95, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and formerly of LaVale, Maryland, died on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at UPMC East Hospital in Monroeville. She spent the last years of her life happily in the Point Pleasant Retirement Community with great friends who cared deeply for her. She died peacefully in the company of the family she loved. The care she received at UPMC in her final days was remarkable and the family is extremely grateful to the hospital staff.
Jean was one of ten children born of Italian immigrants Salvatore (Sam) and Rosa (Rosie) Sirna. She and her siblings were the first generation born in this country. She was married for 48 years to William (Bill) Detrick who died in 1996. She is survived by her children Tom (Diane), John (Denise), Jeanie (Doug), and the grandson she adored, Nick. She is also survived by her younger sister Margie (Owens), younger brother John (Sirna), and more than 100 family members from the generations that followed hers.
Professionally, Jean operated a hair salon. She began her career with a multi-chair business in Cumberland and later operated a sole-proprietorship in LaVale (Joan's Beauty Salon) where she could practice her trade while raising her young family.
She was an avid reader with a great interest in design especially in architecture, fashion, and landscape. Her books and magazines provided a window to the world where her travels included Hawaii and Costa Rica. She loved to spend hours in the garden planting or weeding while nurturing the earth.
Due to the Delta variant outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the family will hold a private service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, please do something kind for someone you love or the world. If you think of her, please picture her in the garden.
Her final care has been entrusted to Nick Scarpelli and family at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A.
