Joan Brett was born in Brooklyn on November 10, 1940. Her parents, Carmela Marino and Antonio Tuccillo, children of Bari and Sicilia, imbued Joan and her sister, Frances Tuccillo Krakauer and her brother, John Tuccillo, with a love of family and pride in their Italian heritage. Joan graduated from Tilden High School. She earned a bachelor and Master of Arts degree in Speech Therapy from Brooklyn College and master of science degree in Special Education from the College of Staten Island. At Brooklyn College, Joan's path crossed Ed Brett's while they were crossing the junction of Flatbush and Nostrand Avenues. That was it! On April 22, 1962, they were married at the Church of the Little Flower on Avenue D. Just this past spring they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Ed says "The sparkle of their first encounter lasted through the years. Joan remained smart, pretty and always fun to be around." Joan and Ed moved into their little "starter house" in Richmondtown in 1966 and remained there for 56 years. She fell in love with the wonderful St Patricks Church and the superb P.S. 23. How she loved the many, many gatherings of family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues that took place on peaceful, friendly Wolverine Street. Joan taught at P.S. 177 and Murrow High School in Brooklyn and retired from Egbert J.H.S. in 1996. She also worked as a Religious Education Coordinator at St Ann's Church. Life was busy but she found it was a lot of fun and very challenging raising her two beautiful daughters, Suzanne Brett and Elisabeth Brett Krupit as well and her handsome grandson, Sean Brett. Days were always full for Joan. She was an avid reader, a sparkling conversationalist and a generous and helpful friend. She loved playing bridge and canasta. She became a skilled water-colorist and the walls of her home are adorned with her work! Her life was blessed with numerous joys- She loved going to the Broadway Theatre. She and Ed cruised the world and visited about 70 countries. A special joy was going on college visits with her "Georgia Peaches" Kassidy, Jaedyn and Kiersten as well as with grandson Sean. She loved all four of them dearly and especially enjoyed hearing them call her Mema. In their mid-seventies, Joan and Ed became involved with the 55+ club at St. Patricks. Joan believed that there was an element of divine intervention in the way that the club blossomed. She made many friends and loved the congeniality that developed among the members. Her final blessing happened when Sean and his beautiful wife, Magda, gave birth to her first great grandchild, pretty little Sawyer Joy. In conclusion, untold numbers of fine people came into and out of her life. It is impossible to mention every name but she wished that they could all know that she was grateful for their smiles, their help, their tolerance and their friendship. Thanks to everyone for coming along on segments of her magical life-long ride with her sweetheart, Edmund Brett. Joan is honored to be survived by her adoring husband, Edmund Brett, by her daughter Suzanne Brett and fiance Tex Catron, by her daughter Elisabeth and her husband Andy Krupit and her beautiful granddaughters Kassidy Lee, Jaedyn Marie and Kiersten Joan. Joan is also survived proudly by her grandson, Sean Brett, his wife Magda, and their bundle of cuddly little Sawyer Joy. She is survived by her sister Frances Krakauer and her husband Jerry and by her brother, John Tuccillo and his wife Dorothy. She is also survived by her brother in-law, Donald Brett, by many nieces and nephews- Patricia Brett, D.F.
