Joan Blanscet was born in Sinton, Texas on May 9, 1944 to parents Joe Harvey Blanscet and Elain Irene Bass. She died on July 8, 2021 in Dallas, Texas after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis and other illnesses. She survived Covid-19 in January 2021. Joan graduated from Texas Tech in 1967 with a B.B.A. in Accounting. Then, Joan graduated in the first Law School class at Texas Tech in 1969 with her J.D. She was admitted to the Texas bar in 1970 and the U.S. Supreme Court bar in 1974. She went on to be the second woman attorney hired in the 70's by Henry Wade, Dallas County District Attorney. Previous to that era, female attorneys were only hired as secretaries. At first, Mr. Wade turned her down for the job, but she kept going to his office every day and sitting in the lobby, until he finally gave in and hired her. Those traits served her well during her almost 30-year career in the Dallas County DA's office as an Assistant District Attorney. She retired in 2003.
Joan was married to Betty King on May 12, 2014 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, her spouse and partner of 40 years, who survives. She enjoyed traveling, woodworking, reading, drawing and competitive bridge.
She has one surviving brother, Wade Hobbs and his wife Danna in Weatherford, and a surviving sister, Gail Blanscet Daniels in Oklahoma City. Also, her sister-in-law, Randi Blanscet Hardy in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and numerous nieces and nephews. She also has a sister-in-law in Port Byron, Illinois, Deb King Lopez, and brother-in-law Jerry King and wife Sue King in Cordova, Illinois. She has a half sister, Janet Woodall in Alpine, Texas.
Those who predeceased her are her biological parents, her adoptive mother Pauline Blanscet Hobbs, and her brother Jerry Blanscet.
During this last year of COVID it has been very difficult to have a loved one in the hospital or in an assisted living home. A special thanks to the caregivers at the Avendelle Assisted Living group, Ardent Hospice nurses and staff and the caregivers at Right at Home. There will not be a service at this time.
