Jimmie D. Merchant April 14, 1941 - May 15, 2022 Roseville, California - Jimmie Doyle Merchant April 14, 1941 - May 15, 2022 Jim Merchant was born in Columbus, Mississippi, to Norene and Alton Merchant. He had fond memories of growing up in the South. At a young age, he made money by planting, chopping, weeding and picking cotton. After attending Jackson Business College, Jim bought a train ticket to California in search of better job opportunities. He eventually made his way to Marin County, settling in at Mill Valley Lumber Co., where he worked his way up from bookkeeper and sales desk, to assistant manager, manager, and eventually owner. It was during his time as assistant manager that he met Doris, the love of his life. Two years later, they were married on January 7, 1978, in San Francisco. Jim was a generous donor of building materials to local clubs and organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, Redwoods Retirement Community, and the Lumber Merchants' Association, where he became President. He was selected as the Chamber's Business Citizen of the Year in 1986 and was also awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club. Jim spent 36 years in the lumber industry. He was also a volunteer with the Mill Valley Fire Department and a certified scuba diver. In 1984, he was selected to throw out the first ball at a Giants game as the representative of the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce. After retirement, Jim and Doris moved to Sun City Roseville in January 1999, where Jim enjoyed golfing, softball, hiking and serving on the Foundation Maintenance crew for seven years. Jim is survived by wife Doris, brothers Harold (Margie) and Roger (Jane), sister Bonnie (Glenn), and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim lost his battle with Alzheimer's disease at age. 81. Jim was a very kind-hearted man who would do anything for you, and he will be missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pleasant Grove Community Church on June 25th at 10:00 a.m.
