Staff Sergeant Jimmie Gentry Lewis (USMC Ret.) 1951 -1971, Santa Rosa County Deputy Sheriff (Ret.) 1973 - 1992, age 88, of Milton, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
Jimmie was born on June 28, 1933, to Ray G. Lewis and Alice Mary Lewis of Milton, FL. In 1951, at the tender age of 17, Jimmie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to serve his country and retired after 20 years of service. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was deployed to South Vietnam twice and was in The Battle of Khe Sanh. Jimmie received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Good Conduct Medal, and Korean Service Medal.
After retirement from the United States Marine Corps he joined the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff, serving his community for 19 years.
Jimmie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, golfing, and mentoring his children and grandchildren in sports. He was fiercely proud of their successes. Jimmie is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lloyd Morell Lewis; sister, Lavern Lewis; sister, Nedra Corn; and grandson, Justin Lewis.
The patriarch of his family, Jimmie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shigeko Lewis; sister, Doris Borders; son, Jeremy (Del) Lewis of Milton, FL; daughter, Nedra (John) Thomas of Round Rock, TX; daughter, Naomi (Jeffrey) Lewis of Abingdon MD; son, Gordon (Lorie) Lewis of Milton, FL; son, John Lewis of Milton, FL; niece, Sarah (Richard) Lewis-Thomas of Milton, FL; grandchildren, Ursula Lewis, Marcus Carson, Courtney Lewis, Audrey Lewis, Gentry Thomas, Trinity Thomas, Norissa Lewis, Namika Lewis, Noelani Lewis; great-grandchildren, Levi Thomas, Brian Thomas, Gracie Conner, Ezra Thomas, and Layla Carson.
Visitation and service will be held at Lewis Funeral Home in Milton, FL. Visitations are on April 18, with family meeting at 5 p.m., and friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Service will be Tuesday, April 19 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Pineview United Methodist Church with Military Honors in Jay, FL. Lewis Funeral Home will be directing services.
