Jefferson Davis "Jack" Griffith, Jr., 96, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.
Jack was born October 28, 1927, in Saluda County. He was the son of the late Jefferson Davis Griffith, Sr. and Bettie Grigsby Griffith. Jack was the husband of the late Margaret Mitchell Griffith.
He graduated from Saluda County Schools and attended Wofford College. He served in the Navy during World War II and upon being discharged attended the University of South Carolina School of Law. While in law school, he married Margaret Meadows Mitchell in July of 1950. He graduated in 1952 and was later admitted to the South Carolina Bar Association.
Jack and Margaret returned to Saluda where they established their home and reared their children. Jack practiced law with his father, Jeff D. Griffith, Sr. and Billy C. Coleman, in the Firm of Griffith, Coleman and Griffith. His practice was a typical, rural, small town legal practice and varied from drafting wills and deeds to representing individuals in the Courts of Common Pleas and General Sessions.
In 1971, by an act of the General Assembly of South Carolina, the multicounty Family Court for Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda counties was created. He was nominated by the Legislative Delegations to serve as the first resident Family Court Judge for those counties and was appointed by Governor John C. West for a term beginning January 1, 1972. When the Family Court became a part of the unified statewide court system, he stood for reelection and was elected to the position of Family Court Judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit and was reelected each time thereafter until his retirement in 1992. For the next 32 years, Jack was dedicated to family and community. He enjoyed a yearly trip with his family to Litchfield Beach and would often go fishing with his friends in Mississippi. Jack proudly told stories of his family to anyone who would listen.
While rearing their four children, Jack also enjoyed fishing and hunting with his friends. You could always count on him to have a large garden which he graciously shared with all. In the fall, Jack and G "hit the road" to attend South Carolina football games. For many years, Jack enjoyed socializing and cooking with his buddies at the Monday Night Supper Club. Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather that encouraged his family to succeed and give back to others.
Jack was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and a member of the JN Deloach Sunday School Class. Jack and his family attended many services and activities throughout his life. He willingly served in many positions at St. Paul.
Surviving are his children: Lynn Anderson (Van, deceased), Jeff (Avis) Griffith, Julia (Glenn) White, and Mitchell (Cathryn) Griffith, a sister, Lindy Hutchinson. Grandchildren: Meg (Blake) Davis, Nancy (Jeffrey) Jordan, Elizabeth (Casey) Kimm, Jay (Michelle) Griffith, Roger White, Laura Mims, Jack (Katie) Griffith, Madeline (Ryan) Lund, MacMillan Griffith.
