Jean Anna Faut, 98, of Rock Hill, SC passed away on February 28,2023 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
She was born in Red Hill, PA. and was the daughter of the late Robert G and Eva B (Gebert) Faut.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Hill, SC where she was active in the Altar Guild and the choir. She was a Lutheran worshiper her entire live.
She attended East Greenville High School, where she excelled in track and field, basketball and field hockey. As a teenager she could often be found at the home of the East Greenville Cubs, a semipro baseball team. She would help shag fly balls and they realized she had a strong arm, so they asked her to pitch batting practice sometimes. Some of the players taught her the pitches she used in the league (AAGPBL).
Jean was a veteran in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGBL)playing for the South Bend Blue Sox in 1946 thru 1953. She was twice voted the "Most Valuable Player" of the league.
After her baseball career, she competed in bowling tournaments nationwide held by the Professional Women's Bowling Association. For many years, she volunteered as a bowling instructor on Saturday mornings for youth at the Elk Club in South Bend, IN.
After her retirement from baseball, most of her jobs were secretarial. Most importantly, she was Administrative Secretary of the "Mosquito Biology" training program held at the University of Notre Dame financed by the National Institute of Health in Washington, DC. Most of the students were graduates from foreign universities.
In her earlier years she loved reading, needlework, golf, swimming, and playing cards.
Surviving are two sons living in Rock Hill, SC. Larry Winsch and his wife, Martha and Kevin Winsch and his wife, Jean. Also survived is a sister, Mary Lou Wentling, wife of Otto Wentling living in The Villages, Fl.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Bonnie Getchell (Bill) of Redmond, WA., Susan Nolan (Brian) of Canton, GA., Andrew Winsch (Hillary) of Seneca, SC., and Anna Young (Steve) of Lexington, SC. Her surviving great grandchildren are Mason and Whitney Getchell of Redmond, WA. Avery (Nolan) Keeling, Parker and Luke Nolan of Canton, GA. Blakely Winsch of Seneca, SC and Ryker and Willow Young of Lexington, SC and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husbands and parents, she is predeceased by her sister, Betty Bardman and brothers, Leroy, Linford, and Roger Faut.
Funeral services will be at Grace Lutheran Church, 426 Oakland Ave, Rock Hill, SC on Friday, March 10 at 2:00 with the Pastor Gregg Hoffman officiating.
