Jean Cate, age 91 of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, November 25, 2021. She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1929 to the late Chalmers Cates and Nelle Potts Cates. She attended Knoxville Central High School and then went on to Carson-Newman University and the University of Tennessee. She became a school secretary at Bradley high School and Hopewell Elementary School. Jean was a charter member at Westwood Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, a member of Central Baptist Church of Fountain City, and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi. Jean was proud of being the book First Families of Tennessee which is about the first families that settled and made a home in Tennessee. Jean liked playing the piano, gardening, memorizing scripture, and travelling.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Robert N. Gass.
Jean is survived by daughters, Vicki (David) Tucker and Jeanne (Ed) Stanley; son, John (Marty) Gass; sister, Barbara C. Hunter; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to dear friend, Marla Richardson and to the staff at Tennova Hospice and Courtyards Assisted Living for all of their wonderful care of Jean.
Family and friends with gather at 12:45pm on Sunday, January 2, 2021, at Greenwood Cemetery for a 1:00pm graveside service. Jake Torgeson, Jean's grandson-in-law will officiate the service.
