Janice Louise Sapp Castles, died Thursday, December 17, 2020 in Savannah, GA. She was born in Savannah and the Family resided there until their move to New Jersey. They returned to Savannah when Janice was a third grader. She graduated from Savannah High school. Janice was awarded a Sallie Maude Jones Scholarship to attend Armstrong Junior college. She received the Associate in Arts degree.
Academic achievements, scholarships, and Campus jobs enabled Janice to continue her studies at the University of Georgia. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS degree in Secondary Education Janice was invited to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Kappa Delta Phi. She was awarded a UGA Teaching assistantship; continued her studies; and earned a Master's Degree in Counseling.
Encouraged by a UGA Prof essor, she applied for a University of Chicago Scholarship to work toward a Ph.D. The University was willing to consider a Scholarship, if she attended part-time for a year to demonstrate she could meet the academic standards. Janice worked as a teacher at a middle school the University used for research projects. A scholarship was awarded; but full- time attendance was required and the funding was insufficient. Janice returned to Savannah and was employed at Groves High school as a teacher/guidance counselor. During the summers, she attended the University of Georgia and earned the 6th year Counseling Specialist certification. She moved to Macon Ga. for a full time School Counselor ' s posit ion. Janice met the Reverend Charles Castles; they were married in 1965. He served at East Macon Presbyterian Church. His Pastoral counseling studies required a placement at the Atlanta Georgian Clinic for Alcoholics. Janice worked as a School Counselor at East Atlanta High School.
She had always hoped to complete a Doctoral program. Encouraged by Char les, Janice applied for and was accepted into the School Psychology Doctoral program at the University of Georgia. She was awarded a Teaching assistant ship. She completed her Doctorate in School Psychology. During the last year of her studies, and worked part time for Dekalb County, GA as a School Psychologist. After graduation, she was employed full time.
A UGA Professor recognized Janice's interest in the use of Rorschach in diagnostic assessments. He suggested she attend Dr. Sam Becks' Rorschach Workshops. Dr. Beck referred her to Dr.
John Exner's Workshops. After attending one of Dr. Exner's Workshops, she studied his everchanging Rorschach System for the next 38 years. She became affiliated with Dr. Exner's Rorschach Workshops. She served as a teaching assist ant for Workshops and in several other capacities. Theirs became a professional and friendly relationship that continued until his death.
In 1973, Janice passed the State of Georgia Psychology licensing exam. In 1982, she applied for
Board Certification by the American Psychological Association. In 1983 she was awarded APA Board Certification in Counseling Psychology. She was a Fellow in the Academy of Counseling Psychologist s. She was list ed in the National Register of Health Service providers in Psychology. She was a member of the American Psychological Association; The Society for Personality Assessment; the International Rorschach Society and several other professional organizations.
Janice established a Psychology practice that involved therapy and Psychological Assessment/ Diagnosis. She served one year as Director of Psychology services at Charter?Peachford Psychiatric Hospital. For several semesters, she was an adjunct Professor at the Georgia School of Professional Psychology. She was a site visitor for the American Psychological Association accreditation of Psychology and Internships programs. Janice closed her practice 12/ 2001. In 1986, she became a Psychology Consultant for the Social Security Administrations Atlanta Federal Regional Office. She continued as a Consultant until 11/2010.
Janice enjoyed learning, literature, music art and, especially, traveling. She related the joy of having a kangaroo eat from her hand; standing in the sands at the Pyramids, and walking on the Great Wall of China. She interacted with others from many backgrounds and believed that each interaction offered an opportunity for learning.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; brother, Cullen Ward Sapp, and her sister-in-law, Cathy Tedder.
She is survived by her brothers, C. Allison. Sapp, and James C Sapp, and sist er-in-law, Judy Sapp, several nieces, and a nephew.
