Janice M. Appel, formerly of North Myrtle Beach, passed away on April 29, 2023. She was born on March 23, 1945 in Chicago, IL to Richard and Anna Mary (Fatkin) Appel. Her father was in seminary and when he finished, they moved to Fostoria, OH. After a few years there, they moved to Canton, OH, where she graduated from Perry High School. Jan went on to earn an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. After teaching for a few years, she joined the Kmart Corporation to become a Security Manager at the new Kmart on Arlington Rd in Akron. She moved to Troy, MI to be a security manager and eventually become part of a team at Kmart Headquarters that controlled the buyers spending in Men's Wear. Jan moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC where she went back to school to become a Paramedic then went on to work for Horry County Rescue. In addition, she joined the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad and served in every position on their board as well as a multi-year term as chief of the squad.
Jan is survived by her companion and spouse of 54 years, Marilyn Gill. She is also survived by her sister- in-law, Sally (James Moore) Thompson and many nephews and nieces; great and great great nieces and nephews.
The family wished to thank the staff at Summa Akron City Hospital Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Jan in her last days.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (on the Historic Tallmadge Circle). Funeral service to follow visitation at 12 p.m. with Kathy Baker officiating. Private interment will take place at Hillside Memorial Park.
