Dr. Janet Marderness, age 78, passed away on April 8, 2022, in Cape Coral FL. Janet was raised in Lancaster County, Pa. She moved to Ft Myers in 1970 to teach advanced level mathematics courses at Ft Myers High School. She retired in 2002 from Ft Myers High and was incredibly proud of the role she played in helping her students pursue their academic and career goals. In addition to the role she played in her student's lives, Janet was able to accomplish her life's dream of achieving a doctorate degree. She graduated from the University of South Florida in 2000 with a PhD in Mathematics Education. She called this achievement the most challenging one she had ever accomplished. In retirement, she remained active volunteering at Harry Chapin Food Bank, offering free tutoring to local students in need and being an active member of St Michael's Lutheran Church. She cherished the friendships she made and the fellowship she experienced at St Michael's. She loved the Tampa Bay Rays, Florida Gators and Miami Heat and would loyally watch her teams on TV, especially during her recent medical challenges. She established the Dr. Janet Marderness Scholarship Fund through the Collaboratory organization in Ft Myers. This fund provides financial assistance to young women graduating high school with goals of achieving a college degree in math or science related fields. A memorial service will be held at St Michael's Lutheran Church on 3595 Broadway in Ft Myers on April 21, 2022 at 4pm. For those who cannot attend in person, there will be a live stream as well as a recording of the memorial service at the following website: https://livestream.com/smlcs. In lieu of flowers, it was Janet's very clear wish that all donations be directed to the Dr. Janet Marderness Scholarship Fund run by Collaboratory. You can search for her fund here: https://collaboratory.org/search-specific-funds/ Janet is survived by her son and daughter in law Matt and Martha Milena Marderness.
