FREDERICKSBURG Standard House Account
Janet Weirich Beckmann was born at her grandmother's house in Fredericksburg on Nov. 18, 1932. She was delivered by her grandmother, Adeline Borchers who was a midwife. Her parents were Edwin Weirich and Ella Borchers Weirich. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church. She passed away at the Weirich family farm on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, at the age of 91 years, and her funeral service will be held at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church.
Jan grew up a couple of miles outside of Fredericksburg, except during World War II when the family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana where her father worked at the airfield, repairing B-17 bombers. After the war, the family moved back to the family farm. She attended school at the one-room Live Oak School and at Fredericksburg public schools, graduating from FHS in 1950. After high school, Jan went to business school in San Antonio and worked at City Public Service and at Kelly Field.
In August of 1953, Jan married Roy Beckmann. They made their home in Fredericksburg and raised their family. With Roy working long hours, Jan was often having to be both mom and dad to the kids. Jan was very involved in school and scouting activities with her children, helping with Cub Scouts, Webelos, Brownie and Girl Scouts, PTA and Fredericksburg Band Boosters where she served as the first woman president of that organization. After the kids were grown, Jan helped with the family businesses Beckmann Furniture and Beckmann Funeral Home and after Roy's passing she served as president of Beckmann's Inc. Jan was also a member of the Eastern Star and served as an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce.
Jan enjoyed visiting with friends, spending time at Lake Buchanan, playing bridge, lunch with her 1950 classmates and weekly lunch with her Borchers cousins. She was a caring, loving mother who always made holidays and birthdays special.
Jan is survived by her children: Randall and Amy Beckmann, Barbi Hagel, Max and Bonnie Beckmann; her brother, Curtis Weirich; seven grandchildren: Christopher Beckmann and wife Crystal, Tyler Beckmann and wife Christianna, Braiden Hagel, Karson Hagel and Katie Hagel, Brooke Beckmann and Caitlin Chandel and husband Karan Chandel, along with one great-grandchild, Arthur Randall Beckmann with another great-grandchild due in March.
Jan was preceded in death by her brother, Travis Weirich; her parents, her husband and her beloved son-in-law, Keith Hagel.
The family would like to thank her loving care givers, Josie and Anna, Pastor Jan Unger and Hill Country Methodist Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Jan.
Visitation was held on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church. The funeral service followed at 2 p.m. at Holy Ghost with interment in Der Stadt Friedhof.
Serving as pallbearers were Christopher Beckmann, Tyler Beckmann, Braiden Hagel, Karson Hagel, Rene Avalos and Barry Beyer. Honorary pallbearers were Katie Hagel, Christianna Beckmann, Crystal Beckmann, Darin Weirich, Brooke Beckmann, Caitlin Chandel and Jonaton Sanchez.
Memorials in her honor may be made to Holy Ghost Lutheran Church Building Fund, Hill Country Methodist Hospice or the charity of one's choice.
