Jane Vaughan Price died peacefully on October 11, 2019 at Arden Courts of Seminole, FL at 99 years of age. She was the wife of the late Frank H. Price Jr., Vice Admiral, USN, retired.
Jane was born June 25, 1920 in the coal-mining town of Jenkins, KY. Her father, Tobe D. Vaughan, was the town dentist and her mother, Mary H. Vaughan, taught Methodist Sunday School and served as postmistress from the 1930s to late 1950s. After completing high school in Jenkins, Jane flourished at Agnes Scott College, greatly enjoying the cultural resources of nearby Atlanta, GA. She graduated with high honors in 1941 and went on to teach mathematics in middle and high schools. She married Frank—and the Navy—in 1944 while his ship was in New York City undergoing repairs from damage sustained during the invasion of Sicily. Jane was a model Navy wife—a competent head of household during her husband’s many absences who moved the family numerous times; a graceful and diplomatic presence at official occasions; an active volunteer in organizations that support Navy families who served as President of the Naval Officers’ Wives’ (now Spouses’) Club of Washington D.C.
Upon Frank’s retirement in 1976, the Prices moved from Bethesda, MD to Largo, FL to be near Jane’s family. They became active in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater. Jane played piano and loved classical music, history, art, travel, tennis, and bridge.
Jane is survived by son Frank E. Price (Sue Ann Miller) of Clinton, NY, daughter Mary V. Price (Nick Waser) of Tucson, AZ, grandson Scott Price of Brooklyn, NY, and granddaughter Alta Price (Jonah Koppel) of Chicago, IL.
The family will hold a service at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, at a date to be determined.
