Janie Pauline Edenfield was born on February 17, 1935 in Millen, Georgia. The oldest daughter of Louise and Joe, and sister to Ann and Eddie, she was raised in Savannah, singing in the youth choir at First Baptist, and enjoying roles in plays at Savannah High. She attended Armstrong Junior College and then the University of Georgia where she was a member of AOPi Sorority and very active in the Baptist Student Union. After graduation, "Jane" moved to Augusta to begin her lifelong career as a Speech & Language Pathologist. After a few years, she pursued her Masters degree at Northwestern University. In 1962 she married Julian Armstrong. They had three children: Julie, Carolee, and Wick. The Armstrongs were active members of First Baptist, Augusta where Jane sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and acted in and directed church dramatizations. Jane was passionate about speech and language therapy and worked for the Medical College of Georgia for 30 years. Jane loved music, singing, dancing, theater, art, traveling and history. A member of the D.A.R., she loved learning and teaching. In retirement, she founded American Pride Through Education to promote patriotism and the celebration of U.S. History in schools. In 2013, she married Ron Coleman, a classmate from Savannah High. Jane loved her Savior, strove to live her faith and to share it. On June 23, 2022, Jesus peacefully called her home. Jane's family includes daughter: Julie Armstrong Sculac (Jim), daughter: Carolee Armstrong-Smith (Bruce), son: Julian Wicklief "Wick" Armstrong, Jr. (Melissa); grandchildren: Marlena Sculac, Brenna Sculac, Gram Smith, Callie Smith, Parker Smith, Jenna Jeffcoat ("JP"), Mitchell Thorn, and Riley Armstrong; sister: Ann Edenfield Lemley (David); brother, Ed Elmore; nephew: Joseph Wade, great niece: Jillian Wade; and adopted sister, Bettye Smith. She was preceded in death by Julian Armstrong and Ronald Coleman.
Jane's life will be celebrated on July 23 at 11:00 at the Storey Chapel of First Baptist Church. Donations can be made to her beloved church, First Baptist of Augusta.
