Jan Newman McAninch October 22, 1934 - November 30, 2021 Prairie Village, Kansas - Jan Newman McAninch, age 87, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2021, in Prairie Village, Kansas. She was at home surrounded by her three children. Jan was a graduate of Wyandotte High School and received her BA from Kansas University in Education. She taught first grade at Bryant Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas and adored her pupils. She received notes for many years from several of her students. Living in Wichita with her husband, Robert Newman, in the late 1950's, she began the Patricia Steven's modeling agency there and was seen weekly in the Wichita Eagle modeling with her associates. Jan and her husband, Bob, raised their family in Kansas City. She was involved in many philanthropic groups. She was a member of the Kansas City Young Matrons, The Junior Women's Philharmonic Association and was President of the Kansas City Ballet during its 50th anniversary. She also was a Docent at The Nelson-Atkinson Museum of Art. She enjoyed a short career as a sales associate with The Paul Hamilton Real Estate Company, where she won numerous awards. After the passing of her husband, Bob, she organized the operation and sale of the family business in Mid Town. Because she had never been involved, she always considered that one of her greatest achievements. At age 65, Jan studied to become a travel agent with Maritz Travel, organizing trips and traveling with large corporate groups overseas. Jan went on to marry twice more to Jim Barickman and Leroy McAninch, which introduced her to Palm Desert, California and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jan loved both the mountains of Colorado and the warm desert air of Palm Desert and spent a large part of her later years in both locations. She was also a member of Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kansas for over 60 years. One of her greatest joys was the Friday night ladies' group at the club with her dear friends. Jan was an avid traveler, loved to play golf and enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, especially KU basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren for the endless card games of spite and malice, a tradition that carries on. Jan will also be remembered by her family as highly competitive, unbelievably generous and fiercely loyal to those she loved. Jan is survived by her three children, Julie Norton of Kansas City, Frank Newman and his wife, Jennifer, of Kansas City, and Mindy Haskins of Las Vegas, Nevada; and by her seven grandchildren of whom she was immensely proud - Alexandria, Danielle and Johnnie Norton, Jackson and Dylan Newman and RJ and Sarah Jane Haskins. Jan is also survived by her sister, Linda Sisney; and her brother, Frank Holwick and his wife, Pat, and several nieces and nephews. Jan's celebration of life will be held at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village in the Chapel on Saturday, August 13th at 3pm in the afternoon.
