James Otis Ulm, 89, of Lee County, Georgia, passed away on June 18, 2024, at Wynfield Park Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born on September 12, 1934, to Walter Knox and Ella Louvenia Maddux Ulm, in Turner County, Mr. Ulm lived for sixty years in Lee County, GA.
He grew up as a cowboy near Warwick, Georgia. In 1954, he married Elsie Bea Atkins, of Warwick. Otis attended vocational school in Americus, Georgia where he earned a certification in electronics. He worked with WALB-TV in Albany, Georgia for fourteen years as chief engineer. Following that, he worked twenty-five years as a traffic engineer in Albany, Georgia..
Writing songs, playing his guitar, and singing were his hobbies. Reading historical novels and writing short historical booklets about events from the thirties and forties. His pasture usually had a horse or two grazing. Nephews, nieces, and neighbor's children were taught to ride by a true cowboy
Mr. Ulm was preceded in death by the love of his life his wife, Elsie Ulm, brothers, Carl Maddux Ulm and William Alton Ulm and sisters-in-law, Angie B. Ulm and Ann Ulm. Survivors include brothers, Richard M. Ulm (Lo Joie), Charles H. Ulm, Sr. (Berta), of Sylvester, Georgia., Grady Donald Ulm (Arlene), Harrah, OK. and Sam M. Ulm of Alexandria VA. Nephews, Charles H. Ulm, Jr, Leesburg, GA, Tim R. Ulm, Sylvester, GA, Dr. Jacob W. Ulm, Alexandria, VA, and Aaron Ulm, Somerset, NJ. Nieces, Carla Ulm and Angie Counts, both from Fresno, CA, Dr. Kimberly D. Carter, Stillwater, OK, Tamora Perry, Harrah, OK, Dr. Gayla V. Bentley, Sumner, GA, Dee Dee Mason, Sylvester, GA, Linda Thomas, Corvallis, OR, Renee' Burgess, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mr. Ulm leaves many great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, family, and friends who will miss him.
Funeral services will be held at Banks Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, June 23. Family visitation will be at 12:30, with visitation from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. when the services begin. Graveside services will follow in the Isabella Baptist Church Cemetery.
