Wadsworth -- James C. Scaglione passed away peacefully in his home in Wadsworth on December 8, 2021 at the age of 88. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Janet, and his children, David (Diane) Scaglione of Hartville, Nancy (Des) LaBelle of Wadsworth, Michael (Amy) Scaglione of North Canton, Nick (Sheri) Scaglione of Columbus, Trish (Dave) Swanson of Wadsworth, and Marcy (Todd) Holland of Cary, NC; sister, Lucy of Canton; and grandchildren, Nicole (Ryan) McMasters, Melissa and Jim Scaglione, Erik LaBelle, Kristen and Anthony Scaglione, Jackson and Alexandra Scaglione, Luke and Ben Swanson, and Cassidy and Danny Holland; and two great-grandchildren, Addison and Avery McMasters. Jim was preceded in death by sister Angie and four brothers, Charlie, Tommy, Albert and Donnie.
Jim was born on July 16, 1933, in Windber, PA to the late Nick and Genevieve Scaglione, both hard working Italian immigrants. He graduated from Windber High School in 1951 and moved to Canton, Ohio to work at Republic Steel. He was drafted to the US Army in 1953 and served in the 6th Armored Tank Division in Germany during the Korean conflict. Jim spent 33 years in public service, as a Police Officer in the Canton City Police Department and later as a civilian for the City of Canton.
Early in his career, Jim was a board member for the Police/Fireman Credit Union, and Secretary of the Fraternal Order of Police in Canton. His dedication was recognized with the Blue Coat of the Year Award in 1978, an award for honorary service issued by the Knights of Columbus. In retirement, he enjoyed helping to build houses for Habitat for Humanity. He later moved to Wadsworth and served on the board of the Bent Creek Association.
A kind, generous soul, Jim showed unconditional love for everyone he knew. He loved God first and his family next, remaining dedicated to his faith throughout his life. He was a self-taught carpenter, plumber, electrician, and king of rigging things to make them work. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed spending time at his cabin in southern Ohio with his family and friends. He loved gardening, especially sharing his vegetables with others, and he dried peppers to create his famous hot pepper oil, which quickly became a favorite for those who tried it. His love for football included never giving up on the Cleveland Browns. His legacy lies in the values he passed to his children and grandchildren-he was so proud of each one of them. Jim will be deeply missed by so many.
