James (Jim) E. Robertson, 89, of Keene, NH, passed away on December 16, 2024, at home following a brief illness.
A Keene native, Jim was born on March 4, 1935, the youngest of three children to Ellis and Dorothy (Drynan) Robertson. He attended local schools, graduating from Keene High School in 1953 and attended William & Mary and the University of Vermont. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1962.
He began his career at Cheshire Oil Company, the family business founded by his grandfather, George Robertson, and carried forward by his father Ellis. Under Jim's leadership, Cheshire Oil and T-Bird Mini-Mart thrived and expanded. Later, he recognized the growing need for self-storage and founded Keene Mini Storage.
Outside of Cheshire Oil, Jim was an active member and leader of multiple industry organizations, including the National Oil Jobbers Council, New England Fuel Institute, and Cheshire County Fuel Oil Dealers. In 1981, the New Hampshire Petroleum Council recognized him as Oil Man of the Year, the organization's highest honor.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was a deeply committed and active community member. He was a longstanding member and former president of the United Way, Keene Rotary Club, and Keene Country Club. His commitment extended to serving on the boards of the Ashuelot National Bank, Cheshire Medical Center, and Keene Chamber of Commerce, among others. Jim's involvement reflected a life lived with purpose, generosity, and a dedication to improving the community around him.
In his personal life, Jim was an avid golfer, skier, and world traveler. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife, Gail, with whom he shared a 62-year marriage before her passing in 2021.
His legacy of service and leadership will be remembered by many, especially his children, Kerry Novak (Thomas) of Cape Elizabeth, ME, JoJi Robertson of Keene, George Bryant Robertson (Christie) of Swanzey, NH; his grandchildren, Katherine Novak, Emily Novak, Olivia Schrantz, Samuel Schrantz, Hallie Robertson, and Owen Robertson; his brother, Timothy Norris Robertson of Keene; and five nieces and nephews. His wife, Gail (Holbrook) Robertson; son, John Alexander Robertson; sister, Dorothy Arwe; and sister-in-law, Talu Robertson predeceased him.
He will be missed deeply by loved ones, but his contributions to Keene and beyond will be remembered.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00pm at the Keene Country Club, 755 West Hill Road, Keene. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Burial will be handled privately.
