James Parrott Register went to the Lord on June 9, 2022 in Pawleys Island, SC. He was born November 12, 1924 in Greenville, N.C. His parents were Willie Oscar and Allie Parrott Register. After attending the Model School (now Wahl-Coates Elementary School) he graduated from Greenville High School in 1942. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1946. While at Chapel Hill he enlisted in the V12 program and joined the United States Navy seeing duty in the South Pacific. After being discharged in 1945 he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and spent time in the Atlantic assigned to the USS Saipan doing initial work on jet aircraft carrier aviation and helicopter-led search and rescue operations. Fleet duty in the Pacific followed.
Upon his return from Korea he pursued a career in journalism. He became the managing editor of the Kinston (NC) Daily Free Press and later was the assistant director of the Office of Public Affairs of the Economic Development Administration of the Department of Commerce in Washington. He and his late wife Zelda Cayton Register retired to Greenville in 1985. He is survived by a daughter -Margaret Ann Kincheloe (Paul C. Jr.) of McLean, VA and two sons: James P. Jr. (Winfield Perry) of Pawleys Island, SC and David Alan (Deb Johnson) of Leesburg, VA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Ashley K. Dyson (Patrick) of New York City, James P. III (Katie Elizabeth) of Houston, TX., Brittany A. Register of Baltimore, MD.; Conner B. Kincheloe of Beaufort, SC, and Cayton Perry Penso (Ryan) of Atlanta, GA. He also leaves 5 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his eight siblings: Hubert Clay Register, Graham Brantley Register, Margaret Mae Register, John David Register, William Oscar Register Jr., Anne Lee Register, Joseph Knott Register and Allie Frances Register Carson.
Interment will be in Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville.
