Rev. James Redstone, 87, of Brick, N.J., entered into Eternal Rest on July 10, 2022. Visitation will be on Friday, Aug. 5 at St. William the Abbot Church, 2740 Lakewood-Allenwood Road, Howell, N.J. from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. The Service of the Reception of the Body will be at 10 a.m. and the Evening Vigil will be offered at 7 p.m. The family will receive guests from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 2-4 p.m., and 6-7 p.m. Visitation will also be on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 6 a.m. through 10:45 a.m. in the Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Burial will be on Mon., Aug. 8 at 12:30 p.m. at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, N.J. He was born in New York City to the late Charles and Lillian Redstone on March 4, 1935, the 5th of six children. He grew up on the West Side of Manhattan in "Hell's Kitchen," and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1955-1959. He married Ellen Josephine Cashen on May 4, 1957 and they settled in West New York, N.J. They had two children, Ellen and James, born in 1966 and 1969, respectively. In his secular life, he worked as a motion picture film technician. Due to his deep faith, he decided to enroll in the first class of the Permanent Deaconate of the Archdiocese of Newark. Prior to his ordination, his wife, Ellen, was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in February, 1975. He was ordained to the permanent deaconate in December, 1975, and served at St. Mary's Church, West New York, until entering Immaculate Conception Seminary full time in 1988. He was ordained to the Priesthood on November 17, 1990 by Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick and served as parochial vicar of St. Francis Xavier Church, Newark, from January 19, 1991 to June 20, 1998. He also served as temporary administrator there from July 1 to August 3, 1996. He then served as parochial vicar at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Cedar Grove, from June 20, 1998 until his retirement from active ministry on July 1, 2005. He was currently serving as a weekend assistant at St. William the Abbot Church, Howell, N.J. and Church of Epiphany, Brick, N.J. Predeceased by his wife, Ellen, he is survived by his daughter, Ellen Redstone-Kolb, and her husband, Jay; son, James Redstone, and his wife, Lisa; three grandsons, Thaddeus "TJ," Jesse, and Seth; and step-grandson, Brian; and sister, Anna O'Connor. Rev. Redstone had a generous heart and gave to many charities. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ronald McDonald House, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Covenant House, or to St. William the Abbot or Epiphany Churches, where he served in his retirement.
