James F. Powers, 82 years old passed away on May 27, 2021, surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He lived in NYC, Shrewsbury, MA., Dallas, TX, Harwich Port, MA, Bonita Springs, FL and most recently was a resident of Naples, FL. He was the son of the late Joseph A. Powers and Anita M. (Gaulin) Powers.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne DeFeudis Powers, his daughters, Kim Ellis, (husband, Mark), Lori Powers Adams, (husband, Todd) and a son, James F. (Jay) Powers, Jr, (wife, Robin), grandsons, Ryan B. Leech of Boston, MA, James C. Leech of Santa Barbara, CA and Presley S. Peeraer of Trophy Club, TX. He leaves one brother, Daniel Powers of Arlington, MA. His brother, Joseph A. Powers, Jr. and his sister, Barbara A. Powers Wilson predeceased him. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Jim was born on August 15, 1938 in Worcester, MA. He graduated from North High School, Worcester, MA. in 1957. He received a B.S.B.A. degree from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA in 1961, CPA Designation in MA in 1966 and an M.B.A. degree from Babson College in Wellesley, MA. in 1969.
Jim served in the U. S. Army from 1961 to 1963.
Jim began his career in accounting in 1961 as an auditor at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. in NYC. He received his CPA certificate in 1964. Later he was Controller at Chiquita Brands (formerly United Brands) in Boston, MA. Subsequently he was recruited by LTV Corporation in Dallas, a TX multi-billion-dollar conglomerate with interests in steel, aerospace-defense, electronics, oil and gas. He retired as Senior Vice President and CFO of LTV. He also served on LTV's Board of Directors.
He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. We all have fond memories of our 24 years of summers on Cape Cod and winters in Bonita Bay. Jim also enjoyed tennis, golf and was a marathon runner. He would have been married to his beloved wife, Joanne, sixty years on June 18th.
He was on the Presidents' Council at The College of the Holy Cross for over fifty years. He was a strong supporter of the Worcester Boys Club. He was a member of Bent Tree Country Club of Dallas, Cape Cod National Golf Club in Harwich, MA, Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, FL, Eastward Ho Country Club in Chatham, MA., Allen Harbor Yacht Club in Harwich Port, MA. and Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples.
In Lieu of Flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Parkinson's Association of Southwest Florida or the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.
Funeral Services will be held on July 17, 2021 at 11:00 a.m at St. Mary's Church, 20 Summer St (corner of Main and Summer Streets) Shrewsbury, MA 01545. There will be a celebration of life in Naples, Florida in the fall. online condolences at www.fullernaples.com
