James Robert Overmyer of Payne, Ohio passed away Sunday February 20, 2022 at the Vancrest Nursing Home after a two year battle with melanoma.
Jim was born to Robert & Elizabeth (Strouse) Overmyer in Mt.Vernon, Ohio on March 18, 1938. He was raised with siblings Carol (Burley), John Overmyer, and Jay Overmyer on the family farm in rural Payne. In his youth, he was a 4-H member and loved playing any kind of sport. After graduating from the Payne High School with the Class of 1957, he proudly served in the US Army for two years. He especially enjoyed his involvement with the US Army Sport Parachute Team.
In 1963 he married Carole (Wood) Overmyer. Jim was employed by International Harvester/Navistar, retiring in 2000. He was also a Harrison Township Trustee for 31 years. In retirement, he enjoyed his Jack Russell dog, Jessie, helping on the farm and watching his grandchildren at their various sporting events.
Jim had a special heart for veterans and was an active member of the Payne American Legion Post 297, most recently arranging Military Honors for departed veterans.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Dawn (Eric) Cook, Wade (Holly) Overmyer and Krista (Brad) Volk and grandchildren Eli & Tanner Cook, Hannah, Libby, and Patrick Overmyer and Campbell Volk.
Viewing is Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 2 pm to 6 pm at Dooley Funeral Home, 5761 SR 500, Payne.
His funeral service is 2 PM , with viewing one hour prior on Sunday, February 27th at Dooley Funeral Home, Payne, with military honors accorded.
He will be laid to rest at Wiltsie Cemetery.
