James Lanier (Jimmy) Netherland of Quito, Ecuador, passed away on June 19, 2024 at the age of 90 years. Jimmy was born on January 16, 1934, in San Marcos, Texas, to Henry and Thelma (Milligan) Netherland. Jimmy graduated from San Marcos High School in 1952 where he was active in Football and a leader in Future Farmers of America (FFA).
After high school, Jimmy, along with his brother, Tommy, and four classmates from San Marcos, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He completed Naval Basic Training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and was subsequently assigned to the USS Pine Island, deploying to Southeast Asia. Upon leaving the Navy, Jimmy attended Southwest Texas State University.
Jimmy was employed by Texas-New Mexico Pipeline Company (a subsidiary of Texaco) in 1956 and served with them until 1974 when he transferred with Texaco Oil Company to Quito, Ecuador. He retired from Texaco in 1996 and then served as an international consultant for Cooper Industries.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Magdalena (Maggie) Toro Netherland, of 47 years.
Jimmy is also survived by four children and their spouses: Larry Netherland, Vicky Lynn Netherland, Scott and Jacque Netherland (all of Fredericksburg, Texas), and Henry and Mariana Netherland (of Miami, Florida);
Six Grandchildren: Cayla Netherland Bellamy, Rachel Netherland Mills, Cress Netherland, Ashley Oros, Cameron Netherland, and Oliver Netherland.
Seven Great-Grandchildren: Clara Bellamy, Hope Bellamy, Catalena Mills, Isabel Mills, Noah Bellamy, Leah Bellamy and Elliena Mills.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Thelma Netherland, and brother, Tommy Netherland.
A celebration of life was held on Thursday, June 20, at Camposanto Monteolivo Funeral Home in Quito, and interment of remains on Tuesday, June 25, at Camposanto Monteolivo Norte Cemetery in Quito, Ecuador.
